LEGACY OF TORTURE
The War Against the Black Liberation Movement
Los Angeles Premiere!
Saturday, February 17,
4-7:00 PM
Southern Calif. Library,
6120 S. Vermont, L.A.

In a glaring manifestation of the Bush strategy to legitimize torture of
"enemy combatants" in the "War on Terror," the FBI and CA police recently
arrested 8 aging former Black Panthers, charging them with an alleged
conspiracy to kill cops 35 years ago. The truth is there was a real
conspiracy by the cops and the FBI to kill Black Panthers!

Known as COINTELPRO, this clandestine 'dirty war' was carried out inside
the US through assassinations, frame-ups, mass arrests and military-style
assault against the Panthers. Now, as the Black liberation movement is
pushing the new Democratic majority in Congress to reopen hearings into
COINTELPRO, prosecutors trot out a totally discredited case. It was already
thrown out of court once because it's based on the documented torture of
the Panthers carried out by the New Orleans police under the supervision of
the San Francisco police and federal authorities.

Several of the defendants were themselves tortured, and the only testimony
against them comes from another torture victim who told the police what
they wanted to hear. Come see this new video documentary, made just before
the indictments, in a benefit show to support their defense. Learn how you
can support the Panther Eight, and get involved in the struggle to FREE ALL
POLITICAL PRISONERS!

Sponsored by the Jericho Amnesty Coalition - L.A.
Join in the struggle to free political prisoners!

The local coalition initiated by Jericho is meeting next on Sunday,
February 11 at 2:00 PM at 333 S. Alameda (corner Third Street) upstairs on
the third floor. Events are in the planing stages for programs at the Afiba
Center in the Crenshaw district, in East Los Angeles and in Long Beach. The
first court hearing for the four defendants who live in California --
Richard Brown, Hank Jones, Richard O’Neal, and Ray Boudreaux—was held in
San Francisco Superior Court this morning, January 29, 2007. They
are presently being held on bail of $3 million to $5 million each! Their
arraignment and a bail reduction hearing was carried over until February 14
at 9:00 am in San Francisco. A support rally may be held here in Los
Angeles. Another defendant is fighting extradition from Florida. Three
others are in NY -- Francisco Torres, and political prisoners Herman Bell
and Jalil Muntaquin of the New York Three (whose conviction many years ago
was based on testimony from the same torture victim who is the state's
witness in this case).

As the Uhuru Movement and all fronts of struggle for African liberation are rising and growing all over the world, the U.S. government's response is to attack and slander the black liberation movement and African people here in the U.S. The cold-blooded murder of Sean Bell in New York is activating the African community. No indictments of the State is being brought on the State of course, but that doesn't stop the Uhuru Movement, which held a tribunal on Jan 27th in NYC to indict the police officers for the murder of Sean Bell. The State can no longer expect to move in the same way and get away with murder. As the African community organizes, the struggle to hold the State accountable becomes tied to the struggle for national liberation.

On Saturday, February 10th and Wednesday, February 14th, the Uhuru (Freedom) Movement will host two community forums to challenge the current unjust conditions faced by the African community in the U.S. and the attacks on the right of African people to organize for justice.

“Homicide or Genocide? Stop the Violence Against the African Community” will be held on Saturday, February 10th from 1 to 5pm at the Uhuru House at 7911 MacArthur Blvd.

States Bakari Olatunji, coordinator of the events, “African people organized in our own interest will challenge the U.S. imposed drug economy and violence that exists in the African community. This violence, for example, that afflicts our people in Oakland , benefits the white world via a lucrative drug and prison economy.”

“Defend the Right of African People to Organize for Justice and Liberation: Stop the Attacks on African People!” will take place on Wednesday, February 14th from 7 to 9:30pm at the Fellowship Hall at 390 – 27th St in Oakland . The forum will include a showing of the DVD “The Legacy of Torture: The War Against the Black Liberation Movement” and a discussion on the recent arrests of veterans of the Black Power Movement who were tortured and framed for something that happened 36 years ago. In addition, attendees will learn about the Liberty City 7, the case of African men from Miami ’s most impoverished neighborhood falsely accused of “terrorism.” Wendy Snyder, member of the African People’s Solidarity Committee will address the responsibility of white people to take a stand for African liberation.

The featured speaker at both events is Diop Olugbala, International Organizer with the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement and organizer of the Sean Bell Justice Tribunal, held on Saturday, January 27th in New York City . Sean Bell is the 23-year-old unarmed African man who was killed on his wedding day in a hail of 50 police bullets as he sat in his car.
