Marchers Honor Dr. Martin Luther King in Fresno

by Mike Rhodes (mikerhodes [at] comcast.net)
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Food Drive to End Childhood Hunger in Fresno was held today. Marchers assembled at New Generation Holiness Church at 552 Tuolumne. A "Mountain of Food" to end childhood hunger was collected at the church. The Community Alliance counted about 500 marchers at the top of the Tuolumne overpass. Police estimated the crowd to be between 750 and 1,000.

Fresno marchers went from A street and Tuolumne to the Warners Theater in downtown Fresno. This was the first MLK day march in Fresno (in a long time) that did not stop in front of Fresno City Hall. Was this in response to an Indymedia article written by Rev. Floyd Harris? See that article here: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2006/12/19/18338896.php

There were many signs at the march calling for peace, no blood for oil, and an end to the war in Iraq. Peace Fresno handed out fliers encouraging people to come to the RALLY IN THE VALLEY to end the war. The Rally in the Valley will be held on Sunday, March 18. See http://www.peacefresno.org for more information.
