December 7th Day of Green Scare Awareness
Thursday, December 7th was a day of Green Scare Awareness. The Green Scare has been defined as, "the tactics that the US government and all their tentacles (FBI, IRS, BATF, Joint Terrorism Task Forces, local police, the court system) are using to attack the ELF/ALF (Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front) and specifically those who publicly support them." The term has now been widely used to describe an early 2006 sweep of arrests, convictions and grand jury indictments of alleged ELF/ALF activists on charges relating to acts of property damage, conspiracy, arson and use of destructive devices dubbed "Operation Backfire," the cases of the SHAC7, Eric McDavid and Rod Coronado, as well as recent repressive legislation such as the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, which attempts to turn activists into "terrorists."
People gathered at 7pm on December 7th at Station 40 (3030b 16th St. in SF) for a Resist the Green Scare potluck dinner, and letter writing for political prisoners. "Refusing to be Silent," a video interview with Josh Harper of the SHAC7 and "22/8: The Jeff Luers Story" was screened around 8pm. Donations for legal support for prisoners were gathered.
On December 8th there was a Green Scare Solidarity Action at the CAFE Infoshop, 935 F St. (at Tulare) in Fresno. The event included a green scare teach-in with letter writing, and performers such as Ryan Harvey and Marc Gunnery of the Riot Folk collective.
