November 7th Elections
Mid-Term Elections Show Changes in Political Landscape
On November 7th, voters around the US will go to the polls. While most of the national focus is on the chance that Democrats will take at least one branch of Congress from the Republicans, the "GOP" and conservative issues appear to be making some gains, especially in California.

Two major San Francisco newspapers have openly endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger and it appears that Democratic Party leaders like Willie Brown (and possibly even Newsom) have been rallying support for the Republican governor.

Proposition 85, which would require parental notification before a teen can have an abortion, appears to be passing. It could force all teens, even those from violent or abusive homes, to involve their parents in their decisions to have abortions.

Proposition 90 is also ahead in the polls. It could make it impossible for government to protect the environment, build affordable housing, raise minimum wages, and mandate health care.

Proposition 83 appears to be passing with almost 70% approval. It will require some registered sex offenders (which in many states include those convicted of homosexuality and teenagers convicted of having sex with those only a few years younger than themselves) to be monitored by GPS devices while on parole and for the remainder of their lives. Could someone arrested for "lude" actions at the Folsom Street Fair be subjected to permanant monitoring?

In Bay Area races, the business community and both major newspapers are working to get progressive SF Supervisor Chris Daly out of office; and in Berkeley, progressive City Council member Kriss Worthington is on the receiving end of the most expensive campaign in the city’s history.
