danielsan reports from Oaxaca City, Mexico

October 15th - Friday night, 10.13.06, three men in a red van pulled up to a Oaxaca City barricade and started shooting. October 14th - The First Forum on National and International Solidarity with the People of Oaxaca has just begun at the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO). October 13th - Ingobernabilidad. It´s a pretty straightforward idea, but here in Oaxaca it´s a political term, a strict test, a standard to prove in the streets. That´s because a while back the PRI said that (x)Governor Ulises Ruiz (URO) was still perfectly fit for office, that the government was functioning, that the people of Oaxaca were 'governable.' Ever since, the teachers & la APPO have set out to prove otherwise: they WILL NOT BE GOVERNED, not by URO & the PRI nor by anyone else. Read more and view photos

October 12th, 2006 - These days there is alot of speculation and rumor, waiting for the outcome of the negotiations happening far away in the Capital City (Ciudad de México, D.F.). There are propositions, leaked deals, and infinite possibilities, with some impatience, too. But nothing is concrete yet. Each side has a central demand, but at this point it isn´t clear whether a deal can be made: APPO and the people of Oaxaca have made perfectly clear that Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO) cannot remain in power, since he has not been in power for several months now. Any step forward depends on his resignation, voluntary or otherwise. Read more and view photos
