SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, CA

Thirty four years ago to this day on September 21, 1972, late dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law over the Philippines.

Now, the specter of martial law has risen once again. Over 750 activists have been killed since Gloria Macapagal Arroyo took office in 2001. Eighty of those were women. Hundreds of others have been arrested and/or disappeared. Arroyo and the Philippine military aided by the US, have declared war on all opposition.

Although international human rights groups such as Amnesty International have issued condemnations of Arroyo, most people in the US know nothing about what is going on in the Philippines. Today in solidarity with the International Day to Stop the Killings in the Philippines, GABRIELA Network - SF Bay Area dropped banners over freeways and street overpasses declaring: STOP THE KILLINGS IN THE PHILIPPINES.
