Xicana Moratorium Day Celebrated in San Francisco
Xicana Moratorium Day was celebrated Sunday, August 27 in San Francisco’s Mission Dolores Park. The yearly event commemorates the original Chicano Moratorium Day in Los Angeles in 1970, when 30,000 marched and police rioted, killing three people, including journalist Rubén Salazar. Middle school, high school and college students in an organization called Huaxtec now organize the commemorative event. Around 1,500 attended to enjoy hip-hop and roots Xicana music. According to organizers, the theme of the day was “Stop the Violence on the Borders and in the Streets.”
