July 16th Event in Oakland to Address State Bill About Health Care
On Sunday, July 16th, Karen Armstead will speak at the Humanist Hall in Oakland about SB 840, the Health Care for All Californians Act (also known as California Health Insurance Reliability Act). This bill, which is pending before the California Assembly (after passing the State Senate), would abolish for-profit private insurance in the state and create government-sponsored universal healthcare for all California residents for life. This event is part of a campaign to gather support for the bill, and to encourage people to pressure California Assembly legislators to vote in favor of it. In August, SB 840 will be referred by the Assembly Rules Committee to the Appropriations Committee, where 10 more votes are needed for passage. SB 840 is coupled with the funding bill, SB 1784, so both bills must pass in order for Health Care for All Californians to become a reality. The event will take place Sunday, July 16th, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, at 390 27th St., between Telegraph and Broadway, in Oakland. Read more
Health Care for All's Board of Directors is initiating a statewide campaign of education and activism called “OneCareNow.” The OneCareNow Campaign, which will begin on August 12th, will feature a statewide petition drive SB 840 and a 365-city/365-day campaign, which is how organizers plan to build the healthcare for all movement into a major political force. The daily events will focus on educating people about universal health insurance, and building the OneCareNow campaign.
