Thousands Join Oakland March for Immigrant Justice
by Jeff Paterson, Not in Our Name ( jeff [at] paterson.net )

Oakland, California (April 10, 2006) – Nearly five thousand people marched and rallied this morning in Oakland for immigrant rights. What began as a relatively small group at 100th avenue this morning, swelled to thousands as clusters of immigrant workers, families, youth, and supporters awaited the march all along International Boulevard. The eight mile march ended with a rally outside the Oakland Federal Building. This was only one of hundreds of actions today being held under the “National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice” banner (www.april10.org).

------But almost as many U.S. flags ! The turnout was excellent . Overwhelming working class crowd . Great spirit . Semi-mass strike atmosphere . (Who knows how many bosses had to grit their teeth and tolerate the absence of a large portion of their workforce ? ) But all the American flags ,very few signs or banners clearly stating what the march was about , even chants of USA , USA ! at least somewhat undercut it's effect . at least in my view . Also unlike marches in Chicago. L.A., and New York , no visable Asian, African , Arab , Iranian , or European immigrant contingents . (Whether that was from lack of interest and/outreach on the part of the organizers or from organizations from the above mentioned nationalities is unclear )
And Unions ! Nada !!! Except for a few people wearing union buttons or t-shirts the labor movement was a.w.o.l. I'm glad i went and despite those observations overall it was good . But there are problems .
People should make their own signs and flags

For the next events April 23rd and Mayday people should make their own banners with slogans they want. And epsecially on May 1st, they should make Blakc flags, and black and red flags to equal teh amount of amerikkkan flags.
Great protest!
