San Francisco | WomynOrganize now to stop the second annual anti-choice "Walk for Life"
Dear reproductive rights defenders,
Congratulations on our recent electoral victory, in which the rightwing anti-worker, anti-woman agenda promoted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and abortion rights foes was rejected by California voters! But while we savor this important success, our fight continues. The rightwing remains on the offensive and will be coming to San Francisco on January 21, 2006, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, for the second annual “Walk for Life.” We need you to form a coalition to let the conservative right know that San Francisco is a reproductive rights town. Our first meeting will be on Sunday, December 4, 3:00-5:00pm at the Women’s Building in San Francisco (3543 18th Street between Valencia and Guerrero). The goal of this meeting is to get your input and put plans in motion for a response to the “Walk for Life.” We matched their 4,000-5,000 numbers last year. This time, we want to exceed that. Your ideas, your energy and your help are a crucial part in strengthening the collaboration we’ve built around the election. We’ve heard strong interest from representatives in the labor, queer, women of color, reproductive justice, immigrant, youth and disability rights movements. Uniting our struggles only make sense in the face of our common enemies. The two local women who convened last year’s anti-choice march, Eva Muntean and Dolores Meehan, were the same people who organized a protest in the streets against same-sex marriage rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The current climate of violence, war and increasing government and corporate power in the United States and across the globe has resulted in escalated attacks on women’s health and the fundamental right to choose whether or not to reproduce without interference from the church or the state. Terrorism at our clinics, billions spent on war and repression, far-right Supreme Court nominees, cuts to welfare and other social services, ongoing sterilization abuses, anti-youth and anti-immigrant legislation, union busting, and lack of affordable healthcare, childcare, and environmental protections mean that it is more urgent than ever that we work together to defend and expand reproductive rights for all. Our lives depend on it. Let’s seize the opportunity to continue building an inclusive, vibrant movement capable of winning the human rights we all deserve. For more information about the December 4 meeting, to add your endorsement, or to talk with a live person, please email the Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR) at bacorrinfo [at] riseup.net or call 415-864-1278. All those who want to protect and expand reproductive rights are welcome – please pass this on far and wide! In solidarity, Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights
