Georgia nudophobia serves homophobia
Anti-queer and anti-nudist bigots team up in Atlanta.
In Georgia, nudophobia supports homophobia.
Nudophobes and homophobes teamed up on 11 December 2004 in Atlanta.
Police shut down the nude musical review, "Naked Boys Singing!",
accusing a gay theatre of lacking an "adult entertainment" permit.
The raid "coincided with a major anti-gay parade," notes national queer news analyst
Ann Rostow, and "reflects a frightening new American prudery".

Luckily for Atlanta, cops don't rule the city.
Mayor Shirley Franklin allowed the popular off-Broadway production to re-open,
saying police had misinterpreted city policy. An assistant police chief had to apologize
for the "mix up", according to Associated Press.
The show had been playing at Armory Theater without problems since August.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had put the musical on its "must see" list,
light-heartedly calling it
"a little song,
a little dance,
a cast of six
not wearing pants."

Were Atlanta cops trying (indirectly) to signal their support
for homophobic paraders?
If a mixed-gender nude review had been tolerated from August to December,
would cops have "coincidentally" raided it
when fascists marched against queers?
Homophobia and nudophobia go hand in hand.
In the United States, both are primarily fostered by "Christian" right-wingers (fundamentalist Protestants, Mormons, and some (but not all) of the Roman Catholic bishops) -- the same coalition who defeated the feminist Equal Rights Amendment in the 1980s, and backed Bush in 2004. And who hope soon to grab control of the U.S. Supreme Court. Those aren't mere coincidences.
Fanatic enemies of freedom (whether "Christian" or "Islamic")
hold medieval religious beliefs about proper human behavior;
and they want governments to enforce their sectarian norms. ]

When SUN began using the word "nudophobia", circa 2004,
we mistakenly thought we were coining it.
We meant a fear and hatred of naked people (nudists, etc.),
comparable to "homophobia".
Our use of the word is mainly sociological, cultural, historical, and political.

We didn't realize that this word was already in use,
with a NON-political meaning;
describing a psychological (or sexological?) phobia,
comparable to acrophobia, agoraphobia, et cetera.

We wonder whether the organized naturist movement is yet aware
of this;
and of nudophobia treatment program(s)
