By Mike Rhodes January 24, 2004 Over 50 people attended a meeting in Sacramento today to organize a Central Valley Indymedia center. While most of the people were from Sacramento - Modesto, Fresno, and Tulare were also represented. Currently, Central Valley community journalists are posting their articles on a page at http://sfbay.indymedia.org/centralvalley/ . Much of the discussion at this meeting was about whether the Central Valley wanted to have its own Indymedia site which would be independent of the San Francisco site. The consensus was that we will continue using the Indybay site but will work towards setting up an Independent Central Valley Indymedia website. The advantage of having an independent Central Valley web site will be realized as the volume of content increases and we need to have a separate page for Fresno, Modesto, Sacramento, etc. The group at the Sacramento meeting decided that they will have members on the Indybay Indymedia editorial board so they can increase their participation with this project. Another Sacramento meeting will be planned and the details will be posted here (on this website) within 1 week. The bottom line from this meeting is that there is great interest in media democracy in Sacramento and we are moving in the direction of having a fully functioning Indymedia center. Thanks for the good, short summary of the meeting. I was very excited about the great turnout. I'm going to write a letter to the Sacramento News and Review thanking them for getting the word out. I am also very happy that 7 activists signed up for the editorial board. This Central Valley page of IMC is a great alternative to the corporate media that we have to deal with all of the time.

It is ok to post .mpg files instead of Windows Media (.wmv) or Real (.ra)? Do users have to download the mpg to play it, or will it stream?

I'd like to suggest, in the nicest way possible, that we come up with a definition for 'consensus' or find one that's been agreed to by another IMC. It seems like there were several different ideas about what it takes to agree/move forward with anything floating around at the meeting. I'm afraid that this lack of ability to make decisions could turn people off.
If everyone knows that consensus means that everyone agrees with something at a single meeting in each of three cities, or possibly at three meetings or whatever, it will make things so much easier. It's not going to be easy to figure this out, given the large and diverse geographical region. But, we clearly can't expect every resident of the central valley to have to agree, or even every person who might be interested in the IMC. So, where do we draw the line? We need to get this nailed down so we can start talking about focusing the efforts of all the people who came to the meeting willing to donate their skills to Be The Media. streaming video

At the moment this site does not have a streaming server, although it is likely that we will again soon. In the meantime, whether a file buffers or downloads depends mainly on the viewer's browser/plugin configuration.
