The ILWU is facing a contract expiration that covers 10,000 West Coast longshore men and women faced with a threatened lockout by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) – and the danger that President Bush will invoke the Taft-Hartley Act in the event of a strike or slowdown. Join the portworkers rally on Wed, 7/24 at noon at PMA bosses' headquarters. Details | rally flyer

President Bush has urged workers to accept a compromise with bosses. Present conditions are reminiscent of the famous general strike of 1934 when San Francisco Teamsters overruled their local president and refused to move cargo to or from the struck port.
