Hiroshima
Livermore - On Aug 6, Bay Area protestors demonstrated in front of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a nuclear weapons research facility, in memory of the bombing of Hiroshima. Thirty were arrested and detained briefly. Many people spoke about the dangers of nuclear weapons, Star Wars, and the effects of nuclear testing. Meanwhile, the Lab security guards were conducting a sick-out because they had discovered that they had not been receiving adequate training about radiation. The guards left literature on the ground to alert demonstrators of this matter.
August 2001 marks the 56th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Japan. On Aug 6, 1945 at exactly 8:15AM, the Atomic Age began with the vaporization of the city of Hiroshima and many of its occupants. Three days later on the 9th, Nagasaki suffered the same fate. This year, on Aug 6th, thousands protested nuclear weapons in Japan. To commemorate the 56th Anniversary, ART FOR A CHANGE is presenting an exhibition of 12 Hibakusha paintings.
