International Latino Film Festival Year Round Screenings for June '06

The International Latino Film Festival-San Francisco Bay Area is proud to present the programming schedule for the month of June as part of our Year Round Screenings series. This month we are presenting films from many countries including Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, and Costa Rica. We are also co-presenting a double screening of a progressive Argentinean screwball comedy with Frameline. We will be celebrating our 10th anniversary this year from November 3rd – 19th. Politics, passion and environmentalism collide in this steamy drama set in Costa Rica. After moving to a peaceful Costa Rican fishing community to work for a banana company, Vincente Vallejo and his wife Abigail become involved in a struggle between angry locals and a multinational oil company that wants to drill off the coast.

This documentary explores the community established by European Jews fleeing persecution in the early part of the 20th century. The subsequent blending of Jewish and Mexican cultures and customs in a near-mythic border city is the subject for Tijuana Jews, a living testimony set against both conceptions and misconceptions about culture, time, and place.

Two Jewish children arriving in Mexico by boat get the chance to rekindle a romance some 35 years later.

Mora and Roberta are a young, happy and hot lesbian couple. They have it all, including great careers and an amazing house. The one thing they still want? A baby!

Mora’s brother Felipe, a turkey inseminator with a simple life in Patagonia, is unaware of his sister’s sexual orientation when he comes to the city for dinner with his sister. The closeted couple target Felipe like one of the turkeys on his farm.

In the tradition of great screwball comedies, The Favor twists and turns as the antics in the apartment become more and more convoluted. Will the couple succeed in their quest for Roberta to seduce Felipe? Or should they switch to a no-strings-attached back-up plan involving Felipe’s partner, an old man who may or may not have just dropped dead?

Venezuelan director Alberto Arvelo subtly captures the lives of two Cubans in a fictional film with a strong documentary style. Rau?Ll Eguren gives a commanding performance as the mature gentleman from the Cuban countryside who journeys to Havana on a quest to buy elegant shoes for his young daughter while the other main character, a woman, goes through her daily routine, walking in the city. All around them is Havana, perhaps the strongest and most important character in the film.

This film portrays the stunning musical biography of world famous Brazilian superstar Cazuza, a gay singer, poet, and seductive enfant terrible. He made his claim to fame as vocalist and leader of the popular 1980s rock group "O Vermelho." His lyrics voice the hopes of a whole generation, symbolizing the middle-class youth rebellion and their strong desire to experience life. Cazuza was the first Brazilian artist to publicly acknowledge his struggle with AIDS. In his memory, his mother created the Sociedade Viva Cazuza, supporting HIV & children. This film about the path of an artist for whom time does not stop is a unique experience.
