BEIJING — Glaciers in western China's Qinghai-Tibet plateau, known as the
"roof of the world," are melting at a rate of 7 percent annually due to
global warming, the country's official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua said the figure is drawn from data from China's 681 weather stations

Killing The Polar Bears For An SUV
Polar bears and hippos are among more than 16,000 species facing extinction, a new report says.
In total, one in four mammals, one in eight bird species and one quarter of the world's coniferous trees are now under threat, leading environmental agency the World Conservation Union (IUCN) said on Tuesday.
It said countries must increase efforts to preserve biodiversity through reducing emissions, tightening fishing regulations and improving hunting controls.

"Liberty is not collective, it is personal.
All liberty is individual liberty."
-- Calvin Coolidge
(1873-1933), 30th US President
Source: Speech, 1924
http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Calvin.Coolidge.Quote.80E7
"Even more significant of the inherent weakness of the collectivist theories is the extraordinary paradox that from the assertion that society is in some sense more than merely the aggregate of all individuals their adherents regularly pass by a sort of intellectual somersault to the thesis that in order that the coherence of this larger entity be safeguarded it must be subjected to conscious control, that is, to the control of what in the last resort must be an individual mind. It thus comes about that in practice it is regularly the theoretical collectivist who extols individual reason and demands that all forces of society be made subject to the direction of a single mastermind, while it is the individualist who recognizes the limitations of the powers of individual reason and consequently advocates freedom as a means for the fullest development of the powers of the interindividual process."

# BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS: OCEAN BEACH CLEANUP 5/5/06 4pm till past dark
(PLUS the bonfire/ burning of David Best's temporary sculpture /temple / from Hayes Green)
The camp is packed and the volunteers have gone home, but the story of Burners Without Borders is just beginning...and it's headed to San Francisco. Not content to fade into memory as one of the most creative disaster relief organizations ever to will itself into existence, Burners Without Borders barely stops to catch its collective breath before it undertakes its next civic service adventure: a community cleanup project at San Francisco's Ocean Beach.
Faced with the potential ban on beach bonfires at Ocean Beach, right now seems a perfect moment to declare an intention to be a part of a solution, and to show the "other" playa a little love. Be a Burner Without Borders on Friday, May 5th, 4pm till past dark at San Francisco's Ocean Beach for a LNT-style beach clean up and public education project on the proposed ban on beach burns in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Meet at north end of parking lot opposite where Fulton meets the ocean. Together, we'll make the beach beautiful (bring your cleanup tools if you have them - trash bags, buckets, magnet rakes, etc.), collect letters opposing the beach burn ban, and then enjoy a sunset potluck dinner (don't forget to bring a little something to share--rumor is Chef Spoon may make New Orleans-style beignets on the spot ). Then, naturally, we'll make a little fire when the sun goes down--some nail free wood would also be welcome. We'll post more details, but mark your calendars now, and start looking for a good pointy stick for marshmallows...

DETAILS: the Fringe, & Sunset Promotions, the team that has brought you such epic parties as “Freaksgiving” and the “Icebreakers Ball” team up again for a twisted take on the annual Mexican holiday – it’s “FREQO DE MAYO”. Featuring an all-star cast of future world breaks, latin, house and hip hop including Bassnectar (DJ Lorin), and some of the local future-world music crop including Soulsalaam (Future Juju), Vanka (Misturada), DJ Sep (Dubmission), and Jaio & Kevin Wardell (Space Cowboys). The more modern funky breakbeats will be provided by underground legends, El Papa Chango (El Circo), Mozaic (Moon Tribe) plus Fringe residents Motion Potion, Mycho, Cocoa, Victor Vega and Billete.
For the last decade, Lorin Ashton has helped develop the North American underground dance music scene. From touring full time as a DJ (an average of 125 shows per year), to his production & remixing under the alias Bassnectar, he has ammassed a dedicated fan base, crossing over from hip hop to electronica to breakbeat to ragga/dub to the jam band scene and the greater Burningman Scene. In January, Bassnectar was voted the #1 DJ in the Bay Area in the prestigious “Nitevibe Dreamteam” poll ( http://www.nitevibe.com ).
DJ, producer and percussionist, Soulsalaam (soulsalaam.com) has thrilled audiences from the Bay to Brazil with his future-world breaks, and live conga beats. Able to create, play the freshest African, Brazillian and Latin styles, then augment them with live percussion, Soulsalaam always pushes a dancelub over the edge. The same dynamic is brought by Space Cowboys duo Jaio & Kevin Wardell, who rock Latin beats with live percussion. For that matter, no one has explored the future of latin music in the Bay Area more than DJ Vanka whose long-running Thursday night Misturada party is a fixture in the local world music scene. Ditto DJ Sep, a woman capable of breaking artists singlehandedly through her Dubmission party and her KPFA radio show “Off the Beaten Path”
Adding to the world music mix will be some of the underground’s hottest future-music talent. El Papa Chango (El Circo) is best known for mashing Latin beats and breakbeat house at the performance-art drenched El Circo events. Motion Potion, “the Swiss army DJ” is best known for his embrace of the local funk scene, but recently has been seen performing live with Parliament-Funkadelic and the Mutaytor., Mycho Cocoa has garnered a superb reputation as a top beatslinger in styles as diverse as Arabic breaks, and soulful house. Like the rest of the Fringe DJ’s Victor Vega’s tastes run the gamut, but the NYC native is best known for his superior skills with Latin house and breakbeats. A crusader trying to bring underground hip hop back to underground parties, Billete is a member of the Fringe collective. Kaya (the Fringe): Beginning with homegrown imagery, Kaia has evolved her visual palette with STS9, Anon Salon, Moontribe, Traveling Corn, and other independent productions to bring an E-motion-al graphic eXplosion to an Intelligent Dance party near you.

# May 6 Bay Area Ridge Trail Council will hold its popular annual hiking event in Marin County on Saturday, May 6th. Now in its 10th year, the ?Ridge to Bridge? event has grown and registration fills up quickly. Volunteers are needed to work at rest stops along the route on the day of the event, or to assist with other preparations.
Participants meet at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge and then are shuttled by bus to hike or run south along ridgelines, with a choice of 30-mile, 20-mile, or 13-mile distances back to the bridge. The route traverses several parks in Marin County, including Samuel P. Taylor and Mt. Tamalpais State Parks, and the Golden Gate National Recreational Area. The views are magnificent, and it?s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a ?through-hike? on the Ridge Trail with rest stops providing water and snacks along the way.
For more information about participating in or volunteering for Ridge to Bridge, visit ridgetrail.org, or call the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council at 415-561-2595.

# 9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade | Saturday, May 6th | 2pm
Finally! The weather lets up a bit, so it's time for a Kite Insurgency!
9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade
Saturday, May 6th
Bernal Hill Park {Top of the hill at the big antenna thingy}
2pm-till it’s really friggin cold
FREE w/ Kite!
We will however have a few extras on hand for purchase, but better to
bring you own.
From the organizers of Urban Golf and the Urban Iditarod comes: KITE
FIGHT! Flying pretty kites at Chrissy Fields is for sissies, the 9.8th
Fighting Kite Brigade challenges you to a kite duel.
Do not bring a quality kite as we are attaching razor blades and nails
to the kite and dueling in the skies! We recommend you bring a
craptastic plastic kite and some razor blades or whatever weaponry you
see fit. We recommend Cliff's Variety in the Castro or the cheap variety
stores in the Mission.
If you’re not in a fighting mood come down, fly kites with us and
soaking in the best view of the city.
oh and the 9.8th refers to gravity. Objects on Earth, if you assume
friction is negligible, accelerate towards the center at 9.8 m/s*s. So
stop asking, your ignorance only reinforces the notion that Americans
score very poorly in science {http://tinyurl.com/lx7kc}. I also don't
want any emails concerning the safety of the fighting with razor blades.
We pick up any that come loose and feed them to stray dogs and
unattended children. So stop worrying, ok?

The sudden effects of perpetual oil shortage are likely to strike within the next three years. Are we prepared? Sponsored by Culture Change, the DC PetroCollapse Conference will present the facts behind the hype about Peak Oil, explore the root factors of our present "oil-addicted" condition, and envision the strategies that we need to bypass unhelpful institutional barriers and achieve post-Peak Oil economic sustainability.
Experts on peak oil and the geological depletion of oil reserves, and advocates for small-scale agriculture, alternative energy and local sustainable economics will discuss "petrocollapse," the imminent failure of the petroleum infrastructure to continue to provide the myriad goods and services that our consumer economy has grown accustomed to. Multimedia presentations and multiple films will demonstrate solutions to the audience.

# FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
// FP and DBC Engineer the Downfall of the DJ //
++ How Weird Street Faire
++ Sunday May 7 2006 Noon to 8pm
++ Howard Street (SoMa), San Francisco
Inspired by the long spate of banal commercial music and talentless DJs
plaguing the City of San Francisco, False Profit LLC and Dub Beautiful
Collective are conducting a Joint Operation to showcase the talent of
actual musicians and producers at the How Weird Street Faire.
False Profit LLC has made a showing at the Faire for several years with
its subversive blend of anti-corporate attitude, plush couches, and edible
items made with suspect ingredients. This year, False Profit returns with
a full music stage backed by the unrelenting force of Dub Beautiful
Collective, which is well known for producing live electronic music events
(and FP chill rooms) since 2000.
"With the rise of the DJ at the forefront of the electronic music scene,
we need live music performances to remind us that people are actually
making music in addition to pushing play," stated Dub Beautiful's Chief
Snark Officer Maer Ben-Yisrael. The stage will feature 5 live acts in the
down- and mid-tempo genres, and in an effort to appease the Faire
organizers, 3 DJs. The audience zone will be a comfortable, shady area
stocked with tools to perform PDA (public displays of art) and PDB (public
disruptions of branding). The Street Faire will host 5 other stages
representing Breaks, House, Electro, Trance, and Trance [sic] as well as
vendors, beer tents, non-profit organzations, and other artists &
activists.
Known DJ sympathizer and False Profit CBO Ben Chun issued a statement of
enthused support from the offices of his self-imposed exile somewhere in
the wastelands of the East Bay Public Educational System but added, "I
don't know what their big fucking deal is with DJs."
This represents the 7th year of the How Weird Street Faire, which is
renowned as the best outdoor street party in San Francisco, drawing top
freaks, costumes, weirdos, performers, and general nutters.
Visit http://www.dub-beautiful.org for details on the stage & music and
http://www.howweird.org for info on the Faire.
The Faire is all ages - $10 requested donation, $5 if in costume, and kids
enter free. Entrances at Howard and 11th Streets, and South Van Ness and
12th Streets.
Dub Beautiful Collective and False Profit remind you to support live
music, kill your idols, and please... no requests.

# May 10 Hello friends of animals,
Pleasurable Kingdom is the first book to focus on new evidence that animals, like humans, enjoy themselves. It debunks the popular perception that life for most is a continuous, grim struggle for survival. Instead it suggests that creatures from birds to bats to baboons may feel good thanks to play, sex, touch, food, anticipation, comfort, aesthetics, and more.
We are lucky enough to have the author on our staff at PCRM; Jonathan Balcombe, PhD is an Animal Behavior Research Scientist who has written numerous scientific papers and magazine articles on, among other things, bat communication, turtle nesting, and bird breeding. He will be giving a couple of talks in the SF/Bay Area.

BEIJING — Glaciers in western China's Qinghai-Tibet plateau, known as the

global warming, the country's official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua said the figure is drawn from data from China's 681 weather stations

Polar bears and hippos are among more than 16,000 species facing extinction, a new report says.
In total, one in four mammals, one in eight bird species and one quarter of the world's coniferous trees are now under threat, leading environmental agency the World Conservation Union (IUCN) said on Tuesday.
It said countries must increase efforts to preserve biodiversity through reducing emissions, tightening fishing regulations and improving hunting controls.

"Liberty is not collective, it is personal.
All liberty is individual liberty."
-- Calvin Coolidge

# # Sat May 6 BERKELEY FREE MARKET is every first Saturday, and <<the idea is to give and receive without money... bring stuff you want to give, including your talnet: juggling, poetry, music, contact improv, capoeira, bodywork, art, t-shirt making, freestyling, martian psychic past-life restoration, and remodeling stuff... all that stuff that's still cool but you don't need: clothes, toys, working electric stuff, your old jaguar, etc. Skip the tedious garage sale, come and enjoy giving it away... come to give and enjoy giving, and/or come to receive and find cool stuff free and give people the joy of giving.
About the Ridge Trail
The Bay Area Ridge Trail ultimately will be an over 500-mile trail encircling the San Francisco Bay along the ridge tops, open to hikers, equestrians, mountain bicyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts of all types. So far, we have dedicated almost 300 miles of trail for use by Bay Area residents, now and forever.
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is the nonprofit organization that plans, acquires, builds, maintains, and promotes the Ridge Trail.

# 9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade | Saturday, May 6th | 2pm
Finally! The weather lets up a bit, so it's time for a Kite Insurgency!
9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade
Saturday, May 6th
Bernal Hill Park {Top of the hill at the big antenna thingy}

++ How Weird Street Faire
++ Sunday May 7 2006 Noon to 8pm

# 9-11 Nexus Searing Truth Salon :. Sunday, May 7 in Santa Cruz Mountains 12:12pm
Hello friends, we've settled on Sunday, May 7 for the "9-11 Nexus Searing Truth Salon". This event is for activists, artists, musicians, film-makers, writers, and humorists who are both creative and passionate about the truth of what happened on 9-11. To help focus and leverage our efforts, we will gather together during the day -- and possibly into the evening -- at the beautiful Satir Center near Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains beginning at 12:12 on Sunday, May 7. The program will include a vegetarian pot luck, a presentation by Doctor Bob Spitzer on double-binds, a possible presentation by Lori Grace on non-violent communication, a brainstorming session on art and film projects designed to generate memes to convey the truth of 9-11, and live music, dancing, and socializing.
If you're interested in participating in this meeting of the hearts and minds of some of the Bay Area's finest movers and shakers, please respond to this announcement so we know who to expect. I look forward to hearing from you.
By the way, this is a free event, though it is by invitation only. So please check with me first before passing this invitation along to someone who's not already on the distribution list. Thank you! If you have questions, feel free to e-mail, or phone me at 650-493-0367.

Jonathan will be reading from his book.

The event on May 11 will be a lecture and a book signing by Dr. Balcombe on his research and findings about animal pleasure. Please come and support Jonathan, SFVS, and PCRM for this groundbreaking and exciting talk!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
See you there!
