Israel to complete pullback in October

by ALJ
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says the Israeli army is expected to leave the Gaza Strip by 4 October at the latest, with Egypt and Israel agreeing to have Egyptian soldiers control an Egypt-Gaza border area.
"There is another stage concerning the departure of the Israeli Army from the Gaza Strip expected to be completed on 4 October or it might be at any moment," Abbas said on Wednesday after meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo.

Abbas provided no further details on the departure.

The withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces is the final step in its departure from Gaza. Israel's army must destroy Jewish settlements and military bases before staging their own pullback.

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said Israel and Egypt had reached an agreement to have 750 Egyptian troops take control of the Egypt-Gaza border area from departing Israeli occupation forces.

"This agreement ultimately gives comprehensive - and I emphasise comprehensive - responsibility to the Egyptians regarding the prevention of weapons smuggling in the Philadelphia corridor in tunnels and above ground, into the Gaza Strip," Mofaz told Israel's Army Radio.

It was not immediately clear what responsibilities Palestinian troops on the Gaza side of the border would have.

Palestinian forces have been working with Israeli troops along the border since a period of calm was agreed upon between Palestinian resistance movements and Israel earlier this year.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that the Israeli army is expected to leave the Gaza Strip by October 4 at the latest.

"There is another stage concerning the departure of the Israeli Army from the Gaza Strip expected to be completed on October 4 or it might be at any moment," Abbas told reporters after meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo.

Abbas provided no further details on the departure.

Israel Defense Forces officials said Tuesday they expect all soldiers to have left the Strip by September 15.

The army's withdrawal from the Strip is expected to follow the demolition of settlement buildings.

IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said the removal of settlers' possessions and the demolition of the houses would be finished around September 3. He said he believed the IDF would need another 10 to 14 days to evacuate all its bases and personnel from the Strip.

The Southern Command wants to complete the withdrawal as soon as possible, out of concern that soldiers left in Gaza after the withdrawal of Israeli civilians are "sitting ducks" for Palestinian terror organizations.

The IDF's departure from the Philadelphi route, along the Gaza Strip-Egypt border, awaits cabinet approval and might be postponed until October.

The Southern Command said cooperation with the Palestinians had been almost faultless.
