BAGHDAD, Aug 7 (KUNA) -- Nearly 1,000 Iraqis demonstrated in front of the Conferences Palace Sunday to protest an Interior Ministry poster branding Shiite leader Sayyed Mahmoud Al-Hassani as a terrorist.

Al-Hassani is a top Shiite leader who broke away from Muqtada Al-Sadr's group, which fought pitched battles with US forces in the holy city of Najaf last year.

The poster showed Al-Hassani alongside Al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmad Al-Dabbash, promising a USD 50,000 reward for any information leading to the Shiite leader's arrest.

Dr. Mahmoud Al-Saeedi, a spokesman for Al-Hassani, said this protest aimed at defending Al-Hassani, demanding US forces to close his file and stop hunting him down because he represents a marjiya (top Shiite authority) with a popular base.

Al-Saeedi said the Iraqi National Guard forces declared a state of emergency in search of Hassani who fled the place he was last reported to be in, describing the entire operation as "provocative." Al-Hassani does not represent nor belong to Al-Sadr's group, the spokesman said.
