Vigil for Maribel Cuevas
Fresno, CA: On April 29th, Maribel was playing on the sidewalk with her 6-year-old brother and other younger children, when boys rode by on their bikes. They started teasing her, calling her names and hitting her with water balloons. The 11-year-old girl threw a rock to defend herself as neighborhood boys pelted her, hitting one hard enough to make him bleed. The boy admitted to officers that he started the fight and was quickly released from the hospital after getting his head stitched up. The boy's family stated they did not want to press charges.
Regardless, 11-year-old Maribel is now being charged with felony assault.

Vigil for Maribel
When: 8 p.m. Friday July 29, 2005
Where: In front of Fresno County Juvenile Hall
Why: To show support for 11 year old Maribel and others like her.
Who: Maribel and her family will be present
We believe that in this city the only bullies are the Police Department, Juvenile Justice System and Fresno County's District Attorney's Office for continuing to harass Maribel and others like her.
Both kids live in low-income/resources area, considered gang and drug infested areas by those in power. For many of us this is where we live in our community. A call for medical help often results in death by cop or use of force by cops. We cannot understand the egregious abuse of power, waste of taxpayer money in continuing the prosecution of Maribel. The arrest of Maribel has transfixed the City of Fresno, causing us to collectively ask about the wisdom and limits
of force in resolving conflicts between children.
