World Environment Day (WED) - next steps from San Francisco's leaders.

by Francisco Da Costa (frandacosta [at] att.net)
World Environment Day (WED) has come and gone. Now on to next steps and the challenge to address the issues at hand. Mayor Gavin Newsom, Jerald Blumenfeld, others talk the talk but now the time has come to walk the walk.
We all remember the many dog and pony shows during World Environment Day (WED) turned week here is San Francisco.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Director of San Francisco Environment were talking about this and that. Now that the fanfare is over - time for action.

Daily our Bay is being polluted by over 200 toxins because the Department of Environment does not have the ability to monitor the Bay and the clout to bring those that pollute the Bay to task. When asked what it is doing - they turn to other bodies, agencies and ask you to request them to do something about the pollution.

One would think the San Francisco Department of the Environement would care to study the Hunters Point Shipyard and have a General Management Plan to address the Cumulative Impacts of Parcel A, B, C, D, E, and F which is under water on the near by polutation.

The surrounding area which includes two power plants, a sewage treatment plant, 5 huge concrete and aggregate plants, hundreds of industrial plants daily polluting the air, land, and water, the millions of vehicles spewing diesel and other toxins into the air.

What is Mayor Gavin Newsom doing about this situation? What is the San Francisco Health Department and Dr. Rajiv Bahtia doing about this? What is Jerald Blumenfeld doing about this? Next to nothing. They all talk the talk but cannot walk the walk.

Daily the constituents living nearf Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and the surround area are bombarded by toxins. Of course this affects their health. One in six constituents suffer from asthma in certain hot spots one in four.

Women sufferr from breast cancer, cervical cancer and other cancers. What is Mayor Gavin Newsom and Jerald Blumenfeld doing about this serious situation?

The pollutants affect the youth and many suffer from ailments that prevent them from performing simple tasks. Many drop out of school and survive on the streets. Mayor Gavin Newsom knows about this. He prefers to make some visits to play ball while ignoring the real needs of the youth. What is Jerald Blumenfeld doing? Next to nothing.

Jerald sees nothing giving a she-thug from Oakland Dana Lanza thousands of dollars to build a Living Classroom at Pier 98. This is a toxic dump and 50 feet away from the worst polluting power plant in the City and County of San Francisco. Dana Lanza come to San Francisco to prey upon - people of color. She brags that she has taken over 6000 children to this toxic dump.

The City and County of San Francisco passed a $100 million Solar bond measure. Nothing much has happened about this Solar Bond Measure which should be administered by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Susan Leal the Director of SFPUC is playing with the lives of innocent people in the Bayview Hunters Point. She is determined and so is Mayor Gavin Newsom to place 3 Combustion Turbines closer to Bayview to further add to the pollution. Where are the environmentalists on this issue?

Would it not be better to go Solar and have clean energy? Why go for 3 Combustion Turbines that use very expensive fossil fuel and pollute the air. Treated water that spew pathogens into the air that can kill innocent people. The 3 Combustion Turbines will be placed on a site that is prone to liquefaction. Go figure!

Where is the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner? Where is the media on this? The media really does not care because it affects people of color. If the 3 Combustion Turbines were placed - at Nob Hill, Russian Hill, the Presidio, Pacific Heights, the Richmond District - there would be a hue and cry. Where is Mayor Gavin Newsom and Gerald Blumenfeld on this issue?

Where are our Board of Supervisors? Where is Sophie Maxwell?
Where is Aaron Peskin? Where are the others on this issue?

Our City and County of San Francisco has the Precautionary Principle in place. The Ordinance prevents any life being harmed. More so if this is done with intent - having knowledge of the adverse impacts. How do you think our Mayor Gavin Newsom and Jerald Blumenfeld think and act on all of the above issues I have stated?

The WED is over and the dog and pony shows finished. Now is the time for action and I see that the authorities that be are dealing with other issues but not the Environmental issues - they were braging about. Where is all the SPIN and the HYPE?
