Critical Reflections on the Black Panther Movement with Ashanti Alston

Ashanti Alston was involved with The Black Panther Party, The Black Liberation Army (BLA) and was a former prisoner of war. Ashanti currently works with Critical Resistance, an organization that opposes the Prison Industrial Complex, Estacion Libre, an organization that works to strengthen ties between people of color in the US with folks in the liberated Zapatista territories of Chiapas Mexico and Anarchist People of Color. He sometimes teaches at the Institute for Social Ecology and sits on the Board of the Institute for Anarchist Studies.

Organizers:

The "NYU Peace Coalition" is an anti-authoritarian, non-hierarchical, anti-racist, non-heteronormative, and anti-patriarchal social justice activist group. Through Peace Coalition, students work to make the connections between global corporate capital and the increasing militarism that we have seen since the rise of neoliberalism and in the wake of the 9-11 tragedy. We seek to promote social equality, justice and peace from the bottom up and fight to oppose the increasing threat of empire.

"Students for Social Equality" (SSE) at NYU fights for justice and a greater social equality by educating the NYU community about issues of social inequality and injustice and working towards social change while building a coalition of Progressives, Liberals, Radicals and Free Thinkers. SSE is also anti-authoritarian in practice.

Through a lens of radical feminism and by way of an anti-patriarchal practice the "NYU Womyn's Center" seeks to identify, research, and confront issues of importance to women in the NYU community by organizing cultural, political, and social activities that are educational and informative.

"Students of Color Alliance" (SOCA) at NYU seeks to make connections and build coalitions with students of color on campus, question typical power relations and push for the realization of a true and equal diversity.

"The Black Family Reunion" is an organization which seeks to unify with Black organizations and students on campus, as a means of promoting active community services. Through collectivity, we can make a stronger impact on the surrounding urban neighborhoods. We wish to inspire the individuals of our target communities, as well as our NYU population to question the status of Blacks in the 21st Century.With an eye towards community service and education, "Black Family Reunion" at NYU works to build coalitions between black organizations on campus and groups operating throughout the city.
