Arrest of Indymedia videographer

by chp
These are photos of a smaller but also violent arrest group, including an IMC videographer. Many people who had been around him confirmed that he had not done anything at all except continuing to film as he crossed market street.

After the first large arrest situation of about 50 people on Market and 5th, the unencircled observers finally took off to march again after about half an hour. They went up Taylor street until they were blocked by a police line by a hotel. As motorcycle reinforcements came, the police started to shove people down the street again. This was in the Tenderloin neighborhood, and there were a lot of poor people and homeless on the streets mixed into this. In this first photo, I was standing in a parking lot behind a fence in order to avoid being pushed. Several people were knocked over bicycles here.

Here, with the INB band from Seattle playing music, the group went from Taylor towards Eddy street near that tiny Tenderloin park with a fence around it. The police were busy repositioning themselves here as some reprobates put this dumpster partway in the street. I didn't see much property damage compared to last year.

Here, I saw this huge line of police coming, and I ran to avoid a block-in mass arrest situation like the San Francisco police are famous for when they lose control. It seemed like such a situation because people were splitting over several streets. It seemed like they kept people within this block for 10 minutes at least, then let them go. I walked around to Taylor again and people were standing by the INB band for another 10 minutes, but I couldn't see why. Then they walked back down to Market, where the next arrest situation occurred.

Despite the fact that all of this was in my field of view, I had a difficult time figuring out what happened here. First, it seemed like suddenly the police were chasing someone onto the other side of Market, and the IMC videographer was walking across the street filming. Then an officer was dragging him and taking his camera away, and threw him on the ground.

Someone here said that a police cycle had been pushed over, and that the police started chasing another member of the crowd. The IMC guy had both hands on a video camera at all times, and a whole crowd around him observed him never breaking any law.

One of the people standing here was crying in pain and tearing, saying his arm was broken. They had handcuffed his arms behind his back, and he had been beat the worst of this group of 5. That would definitely hurt - I know when my arm was broken in traffic, I could only hold it in one position without severe pain.
